What Counts As A Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any dental concern that needs prompt attention because of pain, injury, infection, bleeding, swelling, or risk of further damage. Some emergencies are obvious, while others may start small and become more serious over time.

You should call our office if you have severe tooth pain, facial swelling, a broken or cracked tooth, a knocked-out tooth, a loose adult tooth, a dental abscess, a lost crown or filling, uncontrolled bleeding, pain when biting, or an injury to the teeth, gums, lips, or jaw.

Even if you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, we encourage you to call. Our team can listen to your symptoms and help determine the best next step.

Tooth Pain, Swelling, And Infection

Tooth pain can happen for many reasons, including cavities, cracks, gum inflammation, infection, trauma, clenching, or a problem with an existing restoration. Pain that lingers, worsens, or is accompanied by swelling should be evaluated promptly.

Swelling in the gums, face, or jaw may be a sign of infection. A pimple-like bump on the gums, fever, bad taste, or pressure near a tooth can also point to an abscess. Dental infections should not be ignored because they can spread and become more serious.

If you notice swelling or signs of infection, call our office right away. If you are experiencing trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, or severe facial swelling, seek emergency medical care.

Broken, Cracked, Or Knocked-Out Teeth

A broken or cracked tooth should be evaluated as soon as possible, especially if there is pain, sharp edges, sensitivity, or visible damage. Depending on the tooth, treatment may involve bonding, a crown, root canal therapy, extraction, or another option.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, time matters. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If possible, gently rinse it without scrubbing and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva and call our office immediately.

Dental injuries can feel overwhelming, but quick action may improve the chances of saving the tooth.

What To Do Before Your Emergency Visit

If you are in pain, call our office so we can help guide you. Until you are seen, you can gently rinse your mouth with warm water, use a cold compress for swelling, and avoid chewing on the affected side.

Do not place aspirin directly on the gums or tooth, as this can irritate the tissue. If a crown or filling comes out, keep it and bring it with you if possible. If a tooth breaks, save any pieces you can find.

Our team will provide specific instructions based on your situation when you call.

Emergency Walk-Ins And Same-Day Concerns

Our office welcomes emergency dental concerns and works to help patients as quickly as possible. Walk-ins may be allowed for emergency dental concerns only, but calling ahead is strongly recommended whenever you can.

A call gives our team a chance to understand what happened, prepare for your arrival, and let you know the best next step. If same-day care is available, we will do our best to help you get the support you need.

Common Emergency Dental Treatments

Emergency dental care depends on the cause of the problem. Dr. Chokshi will evaluate your symptoms, examine the area, and may take digital X-rays to better understand what is happening.

Treatment may involve repairing a broken tooth, replacing or recementing a crown, treating infection, relieving pain, draining swelling when appropriate, performing root canal therapy, extracting a tooth that cannot be saved, or recommending a restorative plan after the urgent concern is addressed.

The first goal is to understand the problem and help stabilize the situation. From there, our team will explain whether additional treatment is needed and what your options are.
