A dental emergency is any dental concern that needs prompt attention because of pain, injury, infection, bleeding, swelling, or risk of further damage. Some emergencies are obvious, while others may start small and become more serious over time.
You should call our office if you have severe tooth pain, facial swelling, a broken or cracked tooth, a knocked-out tooth, a loose adult tooth, a dental abscess, a lost crown or filling, uncontrolled bleeding, pain when biting, or an injury to the teeth, gums, lips, or jaw.
Even if you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, we encourage you to call. Our team can listen to your symptoms and help determine the best next step.
Tooth pain can happen for many reasons, including cavities, cracks, gum inflammation, infection, trauma, clenching, or a problem with an existing restoration. Pain that lingers, worsens, or is accompanied by swelling should be evaluated promptly.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, time matters. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If possible, gently rinse it without scrubbing and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva and call our office immediately.
